Marcos Smyth - Artist

Marcos Smyth, artist standing on a train caboose

Signs can be confusing and misleading.  Learning to read them in context is key to understanding.

Hands-on learning has been my post academic "graduate school."  Many of my skills were developed while apprenticing in metalworking jobs.  Working with several artists I admired, I learned about structure, design and the value of a strong work ethic, which gave me the confidence to embrace my  creative vision.  Born and raised in Brazil to American parents, education in both countries provided different cultural perspectives.  My love of Nature and respect for native culture found common ground in both nations.

The inter connections and relationships between shapes and materials observed in natural design serve as guides to building my sculptures.

Exposure to native cultures has been of great value.  Their respect for, and use of, natural materials to create functional and symbolic objects influences my own creative approach .  As a result, I maintain a meaningful reverence for the environment while employing natural materials.
